Besides catnip, are there any other herbs that are beneficial for cats?
Hi Janina,
Yes, many cats enjoy a good catnip for both amusement and to relax. Other great plants specific to cats are:
- Catgrass (aka: wheatgrass) while being full of many vitamins and minerals, cat grass also provides an extra boost of fiber. Since cats are strictly carnivores (their digestive system cannot easily digest many veggies, fruits or grains) chomping on abit of cat grass acts as a way to flush the system..so to speak. Also, is beneficial in resolving hairball issues.
- Cat Thyme: like catnip, it is a stimulant and can be an alternative when catnip has had no effect.
- Mint: many cats are attracted to its scent and most like to just play (and ultimately destroy it). Should not be confused with Peppermint - which if ingested, can cause an upset tummy.
- Valerian: another stimulant. Since it has a perfumy scent, some cats will find its odor displeasing. But others love it.
- Licorice Root: an anti-inflammatory - helps aid arthritis. Promotes liver health, and can help resolve digestive issues.
Most of these plants can be found at a local garden/nursery store or the seeds purchased online. Be sure to check with your veterinarian to discuss what is best for your cats personal needs.
