Best over the counter drug for cat with IBS?

  • Cannot afford the prescription dry food in for this.  Best OTC cat food for it?  Cat is thin.

  • Hi there, this is Linda, a vet with 10 years of clinical experience.

So, the treatment for IBS will vary from cat to cat.

This is because there are lots of potential causes and what works for one cat may not work for another.

If the trigger is a food sensitiviy or allergy, the key will be in discovering which ingredients your cat reacts to. We ideally provide a hydrolysed diet (from Royal Canin or Hills), but I appreciate this is costly.

Another option would be a very limited ingredient diet; there are lots available that would contain e.g. mostly meat or fish and a few other ingredients e.g. Merrick limited ingredient.

For some cats, the trigger is stress (e.g. living with another pet, travel, boarding), so we need to manage their homelife and environment.

Calming products like daily supplements and plug-ins can also be very helpful.

For some cats, prescription medication will be needed, especially during flare ups; so a vet visit is key if we're not getting on top of things.
