How can I get a feral cat into a carrier, to take to a vet. He comes to eat, friendly, but can't pet him. Don't have a trap..

If this is truly a feral cat (rather than a stray) it is not safe to try and handle him and could result in serious bites and scratches to you.
The only safe way to catch a feral cat is to use a humane cat trap. While you don't have one, local vets or cat sanctuaries should be happy to lend you one to use.
Alternatively, you could ask a cat charity or resuce to come and set their humane trap. They should be happy to do so, especially if he needs to be neutered or is unwell.
