How to stop my cat from peeing on the floor

  • My sisters cat is 14 and started to pee on the floor had her checked found nothing wrong what makes them do that n what can be done

  • Hi there, this is Dr Linda, a vet with 10 years of small animal experience.

I'm sorry to hear about this issue with your sister's cat, I know it can be hugely frustrating.

If nothing has changed at home (like a new pet, new baby or recent house move), this will more likely be caused by a health issue. I say this due to the cat's age.

At 14. things like kidney disease, bladder masses, urinary infections, dementia and arthritis (making it hard to posture and pee in the tray) would not be uncommon.

I'd want to xonfirm the vet has not only done a full health exam, but also cultured the urine for bacteria, run a blood test and scanned the bladder. If not, these tests are the next step.

From home, things that can help would include:

    • Ensuring he always has access to 2 clean litter trays (assuming he is the only cat)
    • Keep the trays super clean and perhaps trialling a new litter type
    • Ensuring the litter tray has a shallow lip and is very wide, as older cats struggle with narrow trays
    • Cleaning any accidents with an enzymatic spray to remove the odour

Hopefully we can get on top of this soon.
